First Week in Costa Rica!!!

Holy Moly I can´t believe I finally got here!! So much has happened so I’ll try to update you as much as I can. The plane ride here was great. I rode first class from Georgia to Costa Rica. They served me a whole meal and even gelato. I sat next to this girl who is one of the owners of coke cola. She became like a best friend to me haha. I told her about the gospel and she said she would go to church but we will see.

The missionaries arrived at the Costa Rica airport August 18, 2014

So I got off the plane and ahhhhhh it is absolutely beautiful. Hot hot hot. I immediately put my hair up. I met the president and his wife. Gosh they are such great people. We then all squished into the tiny van. It was the closest I´ve been to a male in a long time. Very uncomfortable!! Anywho... the drive was crazy. Actually every driver is crazy in Costa Rica. No one stops at stop signs, they just go crazy. But I like it :)

They used a cattle truck to transport all the new missionaries luggage.
So all of a sudden we end up at the temple. The first place I go to is the temple ahhhhhh what a great day. Anyway so all 30 of us new missionaries stood in a circle by the temple and the president talked to us. It was incredible. I learned so much. The point was that our purpose as missionaries doesn’t end at baptism. I´m not really sure what happened but the president pointed to me and told me to come in the middle of the circle. He then asked why I had my cardigan around my waist and so I didn’t really know what to say so he then told me to say ¨para bautizar y retener¨. Which means to baptize and retain. So mom you’ll probably need to explain that better but I’m going to move on now. (Kendra: I have no idea what she’s talking about. I think something was lost in the translation. Maybe someone can explain it to me J.)

So that night I ended up at this little house with about 20 Hermana's haha it was great. I was so tired I didn’t even care that I didn’t have a pillow or that there were bugs everywhere. The next morning we couldn’t really get ready since there were so many girls. I used the bathroom and the toilet lid literally fell of I kid you not. Hahaha I love it. The next days was all paper work and then we had interviews with the president. After interviews we went on divisions with other sister missionaries. Hermana Markle and I went with 2 other Hermana’s to this house with members. They gave Hermana M and I this plate of food I’ve never seen before. I later found out it was fried pig fat lol.

So then we split up and I went with one of the Hermana’s. She told me that I would be asking her to be baptized. Soooo we went and they were a really cute couple. I didn’t know what they were saying. They asked me why they can’t drink coffee and I just looked at the other Hermana and she just laughed. They then told me it was a set up and they really were members. That night I slept in the same house.

So the next day we all walked to presidents house for breakfast and to meet our new companions. The food was delicious. I’m glad I ate a lot because that will probably be the best food I have for a while haha.
All the trainers and new missionaries at the President's house.
So all the new missionaries were on one side and then all the trainers were on another and the president would call a trainer up and tell them where they would be serving and he would kinda explain the area like if it was cold or hot or poverty or not and then he would call their companion. Every time everyone was called everyone cheered and then they all did that thing Thomas does with his hand. EVERYONE DOES IT HERE! Thomas this is your country at heart!!

So I got called up ahhhhhh I love my companion. I am serving in Santo Domingo! They say it’s the cold area but they don’t know what cold is. It’s perfect weather. I hardly ever see the sun. So I’m still white as can be.

My companion knows absolutely no English. Haha sooo we walk around with a dictionary and there is a lot of silence haha. So she instantly had me get my stuff and we were off. She is from Honduras and she has 18 siblings. Ya 18 craaaazzzzyy. She has been a member for 2 years but literally knows more about the gospel than anyone I’ve ever met. I don’t know what she is saying half the time but I know it’s good. I want to know Spanish soooo bad so I can learn from her. She is the most selfless person. She gave me her little socks because she saw I had a million blisters and then she wrote the cutest little note on my planner hopefully I can upload the photos.
My new companion, Hermana Cuevas!

Okay so we got on a bus with all my luggage (it was a struggle I’ll be completely honest) it started POURING and we were in the middle of a big city. Everyone was looking at me like I was from mars but I just smiled haha. I left like the girl off of the movie, Leap Year. So we got to Santo Domingo after a 30 minute bus ride. So it’s pretty close to San Jose. We first went to our cook with the other hermanas. One of them knows English and the other doesn’t. Our cook is amazing ahhhh. Yummy yummy yummy. Rice and beans every day. I’ve had a lot of interesting food so far though. Very interesting.

The house we live at is really nice! Well compared to what I though it would be. We instantly went to work. My first lesson was with a girl named Lisebeth. She is so cute. She is on date for baptism. After the lesson Hermana Cuevas was talking to her mom and she just came over and hugged me. The people are so nice. Even though I can’t speak much they are just so sweet to me. I don’t deserve it.

Another lesson we had was with a girl named Hilary. She was funny. She first asked if I was a gringo. (I guess that means I’m white) so I just nodded my head. Then my companion was teaching and in the middle of the lesson she asked to touch my hair. Hahaha so I said of course. And then she said, “Mom that is so clean.” I wanted to say you should have seen it yesterday but then I remember I don’t know Spanish. I was reminded of that A LOT this week. It’s frustrating but I love it. Ummm let’s see…  So my companion and I walk down the street and she says my vocab word in English and I tell her in Spanish. I am glad she is so patient with me. Gosh so many blessings this week.

One time we were walking down the street and this car stopped and asked if we wanted a ride. My companion just kinda looked at me, and then the guy pulled out with recommend like it was his ID. It was funny. There was a little girl in the car and I told her how President Eyring is in our stake and she freaked out haha it was so cute.

Hermana Fowler & Cuevas
So in Costa Rica, or maybe Central America in general I’m not sure, they have a big lunch but they don’t have dinner until like 8. So my companion and I stopped by this bakery one day ahhhhh it was heaven. We then started walking down the street and we were about to go one way but decided to go the other. (The Spirit) We then started talking to this lady who is about 50 and she let us come in and talk to her. My companion was kinda explaining a few things to her. I didn’t know what was being said. Literally not a word but the spirit was sooo extremely strong I can’t even explain it. I started bearing my testimony and just started crying. We were all in tears. She has agreed to baptism and we are teaching her again tomorrow. Ahh incredible.

It’s crazy how people really are placed in our paths for a reason. Another investigator we have is just so incredible. Her granddaughter practices her English with me it’s so cute. She talks about Frozen all the time. It’s funny, no one knows English here and if they do they have learned it through songs. Like this one little girl was singing One Direction the other day- every word perfectly. Hahaha.

Okay so one day we were walking down the street and we said hi to a guy and asked how he was. He said he was bad so we started talking to him. I think he was drunk but I’m not sure. We were saying bye and he said something that I didn’t know so I looked at my companion and she just grabbed my arm and we walked away. She started laughing so hard and got her dictionary out to tell me what he said. He said, ¨I’m going to rip out your beautiful eyes right now” yaaaa and then I started walking a lot faster hahaha it was funny.

People are so friendly here. They all smile so big and ask how I’m doing. Lots of people call me words I don’t know but I just act like I didn’t hear. I love it here. My area is not like the pictures on the internet but it’s pretty in its own way. Ahhh I wish I could send my pictures. I will be sending so many next week so be prepared. This one guy said to me, “Muchacha guapa, how are you?” But he said, How are you in English kinda like you would say to a baby. And muchacha guapa means beautiful girl.

So Sunday was great I met the ward and they are all so nice. They called me up to bear my testimony. It was really simple but while I was talking, there came a dog down the aisle. I kid you not. hahaha I love it!!! After church we went to a member’s house to eat. They were sooo nice. I found a bone and some string in the soup but it was still good. The people here are so generous.

I had some very interesting fruits. They are absolutely delicious. So so so so good.
Mamon chino
I have not yet been sad here besides today when my ldsmail wouldn’t work and I didn’t get to read any of your emails ahh but it’s okay. Hopefully I can next week. Every day I am here I realize more how much I love my family. I’m so glad I have eternity to spend with you. I feel so extremely honored to dedicate these 18 months to the Lord. This gospel blesses lives. And the people in Costa Rica need to know that. The Lord is helping me so much. Every sentence I say in Spanish is a blessing. I love you all and hope all is going well!! I pray for you all every day!! Every day!!! Thank you for all the support. I LOVE YOU MOM, DAD, BEN, JAKE, THOMAS, AND SAM!!!!!!! I LOVE YOU TIMES A MILLION!!!!!!!

I love you mom!!! with all my heart!!!!!! I’m happy, I’m safe and I love what I’m doing!!!!! Don’t worry.

(Notes from some of the missionaries.)

Momma Fowler!
Thank you so much for letting me borrow your amazing daughter for 6 weeks! Best 6 weeks of my life! We had a blast together and I love her so much! She taught me a lot and I am excited to have a friend out in the field! You are an amazing mom! She talks you up every day! She loves you and misses you! J Thanks again for the shower cap, notes and picture of me and my companion. You are too cute! I will take care of your Anna as much as I can in Costa Rica. Hopefully we can be companions again soon J Thanks again! Have a great day!
Love,
Hermana Markle

Kenj!
Thank you for birthing Hermana Fowler. She is so great! If it weren’t for her I would have gone crazy these past 6 weeks in the MTC. Even though she gets hungry everyday she is still the best. I know that deep down inside she is not actually as violent as she appears to be … or maybe she is … who knows! J Also, thank ya for the treats. I am now nice and plump and I love it. I hope to meet you one day after the mish!
Love,
Hermana Brooke Gibson <3

What’s up Mrs. Fowler?
Thank you so much for your letter and also the picture of our district! That was very thoughtful and I appreciate it! Hope everything is going well. Just thought I’d write you and tell you Hermana Fowler is doing great! She says she’s bad at the language but she doesn’t give herself enough credit.
Well, Adios!
Elder Kirk

Mrs. Fowler,
Thanks for the Skittles! I wasn’t serious when I told Hermana Fowler to request them, but that was super nice of you anyways! She speaks so highly of you. We always debate about whose mom is better. We just concluded you’re both the best!
Adios!
Elder Kirk

Mommy <3

I got your package today J You are the best mom in the world! Have I mentioned that? You are so!!! so!!! so!!! thoughtful. Mom you are the best person I know. I love you with all my heart. I feel very prepared with supplies and money. Not so much the language! Yesterday we had in field training where we pretty much listened to speakers for 9 hours. Yikes. But it was helpful.

There is an elder here that is going to Costa Rica that is from Bountiful. He went to Viewmont but he says he knows Kanela. You should try to find his mom. I’ll figure out his name and let you know. So pretty much all I have left to do here at the MTC is go to two more classes and then my Sunday meetings. Oh and pack. I’m packing during gym time today (well we all have to) I really hope everything is under 50 pounds. They said no backpacks but I’m going to bring one anyway and just not stuff it very full. I’m so excited to meet my mission president and his wife. I’ve heard so many good things about them. Mom I’m going to the best mission in the whole world. I heard that on the first day (Tuesday) we go to the temple. Well I don’t want to say too much because I wanna talk about everything on the phone. But Mom thank you so so much for everything. I am the luckiest daughter in the world! I love you more than anything!

You are my best friend forever!
Love always,
Your missionary

I have my interview with the president in a few minutes and then I will have divisions where I will go out with some sisters and start teaching. I’m so so so excited :) the mission president has a facebook page called Costa Rica San Jose Missionary Parents. She said she would put up some pictures so go look at those. I am so happy!! I wanna just talk to people but not for another hour or so. I slept in this tiny little house without a pillow and ants running around. It was awesome. I love you mommy! I’ll email you on Monday. Off to Costa Rica!!!

Today Anna left for Costa Rica!!! My friend Jolene works at the airport and was able to lend Anna her phone to call home. She also gave her a big hug for me J

Rachel, Anna, and Jolene at the airport.
When Jolene got her phone back, she went to send me the picture she’d gotten of them at the airport together, and Anna had left her with a few more surprise pictures. Love that Anna!!!!

Ultimo semana en el CCM :)‏ Translates: Last Week at the MTC

My last p-day at the MTC! Kinda sad. But mostly just pumped out of my mind to go to COSTA RICA. This week was great! I feel like I’m already getting memory loss. No bueno. But I will do my best to remember what has happened :)

So first... Every Friday we wake up early to do service (so like clean the toilets and such. Side note Markle loves cleaning toilets so she always volunteers us for that. Love her :)) Sooo last service day we were told that there is this magical room called the pillow room. We asked this worker about it and she said that if we didn't tell anyone she would take us there. So this week we were counting down the days for Friday. The lady gave us two minutes. I felt like a 2 year old but whatever :). There were 283 pillows. I am now determined to have a pillow room for myself when I am older!

Heaven <3
Another exciting thing that happen (quick reminder that Hermana Markle and I literally think anything is exciting. For example getting a package is like getting a million dollars) was we got to go off campus. Hermana Markle had a checkup so we got on a shuttle and the driver took us to the Provo hospital. I drove past Claire's apartment so I blew it a kiss <3 Even though we were like a block away it was an adventure! Don't judge :)

Woohoo mi companera at the doctors office
We got our travel plans this week. I felt like doing a back flip because I was so excited. But I didn't. There are 28 missionaries all going to Costa Rica all on the same flight. So we are going to try to convert the whole plane. No but we are very excited. Markle and I talk about going to Costa Rica about 60% of the time. Our teacher served in Costa Rica so he tells us stories all the time.

This is my desk!! Elder Kirk (the artist) made it for me.
We said goodbye to one of our teachers on Monday. It was really hard. I feel like these next 18 months are going to be goodbyes after goodbyes after goodbye. He gave us some amazing advice. One night we were having class and it was silent for a minute I could tell my teacher was getting kinda emotional. He asked us about how much we want to be a missionary. He said a few other words but then said "I cannot express how jealous I am of the plaque over your hearts." He asked us a question that he was asked when he was in the MTC. He said, “Do you want to serve the Lord more than you want to breathe?” It was a great moment for our district. It’s easy to go through the motions as a missionary. And Satan wants it to be that way. I made goals this week that are for the rest of 2014 and every week when I am planning I am going to make sure that I am heading towards those goals. These 5 weeks have felt like 1 week. It scares me to think about how soon it is that I’ll be on the flight home instead of on the flight to Costa Rica. But for now I’ll just make every day count.

People from home yay yay yay :)

Sorry if this email is kinda short and not that exciting but I can pretty much promise you that next weeks will be more exciting!! I’m going to miss the MTC but man am I happy that I am serving in Costa Rica. It’s going to be hard to not look like a tourist.

I cannot wait to talk to my family on Monday. I LOVE MY FAMILY!! And I almost cried when I saw that Thomas emailed me!! Miracles do happen on missions :)
I LOVE YOU ALL!!!!

Love always,
Hermana Fowler

Adio USA.

MOMMMY!!! hi hi hi!! I’m just getting online! I went to get a package and look what I found in it!!

I literally had tears in my eyes :( I’m so sorry they took it away and you spent money on it. Mom thank you sooo much for the package! You are an angel!! THE PANTS ARE SOOOO CUTE!!!!!!! You are the best!! And the earrings are PERFECT!!! And the water bottle?? Seriously you are perfect! Markle is going to looooooove the necklace. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

Those notes you took on the conference were sooo good mom. Can we someday go to that?? That sounds like soooo much fun! So did you cry during your massage this time? Oh mother you are a funny one!!!I CANT BELIEVE WHAT LILLY DID hahahahahahaha!!! That is sooooo funny!!! Gosh Lilly really had withdrawals bad. Will you send me a picture of Lilly? Try to make her look skinnier than she is J. I miss laughing with you!

Sooooo my carry on can only be 40 pounds. I’m screwed! I can give the mail office a box and they will keep it somewhere in Provo then they will call you and you can have like Aubree pick it up.

So plan on getting a call from me on Monday around 6-9:30, and then about 1:30-3:45. We are flying to Georgia and then we are going to Costa Rica and we will get there at 8 at night. I can’t wait to talk to my best friend!!

I love you Mom

District
August 3, 2014

Mommy,
Hello there <3. Today is Sunday. I have about 2 hours of meetings but other than that it’s not much of a change. I wasn't called to speak so that was a relief. Today we were writing on the board because Elder Kirk is teaching me how to write in cursive better and so I wrote, “My mom is my best friend!” You really are. I told him that in heaven we will probably be the same age J I’m pretty sure in heaven Heavenly Father just couldn't separate us so he had us do rock paper scissors and yeah you won so you were the mom! We have too much fun when we are together. I just love you Mom!

Yeah you sent me the family tree but not the other stuff, you said there was more you hadn't finished. We haven’t used it all so I don’t know how important it is. I’m so excited for you to go to that conference! I hope I hear lots about it. I love getting dear elders from you it makes me so happy. You and your motivational speaker’s haha! I love it. Maybe you should consider going into that profession. I know you are scared to have a math class, but I’m so excited because truly you are so smart and you will see that when you do so well!! But really if we could just be told what to do and when to do it life would be so easy. But it also would be really boring. Don’t be afraid to mess up. No one’s perfect (you are pretty close) but don’t have scared thoughts about going back to school, well not back to school but changing schools. What a huge opportunity and just imagine all the wonderful people you will meet. Everyone is placed in our life for a reason so be excited to find out why and to gain more knowledge! So wonderful <3

The Spanish is a struggle I’ll be completely honest. I hardly know anything. I’m going to be very lost when I get to Costa Rica. But it’ll make it even more rewarding when I do understand it. I leave in 8 days Oh my lanta I am so excited! My flight is at 9:40 so I am leaving the MTC at 4:35 then going to the airport so I’ll probably be calling you around 7 or 8 and then I fly to Georgia and have a two hour delay so maybe I’ll be able to call you again. Who knows. Gosh I’m excited. There are 28 of us going to Costa Rica all on the same plane. So I’ll be traveling with Rachel <3. I can’t wait to hear your voice.

So the bad news is my carry on can only be 40 pounds so I will be sending stuff home. I’m not sure what. It’s going to be a struggle. I need to look into the package service you are talking about.

I pray for our family multiple times every day. We have such a wonderful family! I wouldn't trade it for anything. I absolutely love hearing about your weeks. Please never stop J. How is everything at home? Is the grass still green? What does my room look like? Anything exciting happening? Gosh I can’t believe Makenna is engaged. That blows my mind. Wow! I’m doomed Mom. I’m so awkward when it comes to boys. There’s going to have to be a miracle after the mish or we will be roommates 4 ever J. Anyway I’m running out of time but I will write you on Wednesday! Thank you so much for all of the packages and letters and support! I love you with all my heart! Be my best friend forever K? I love you Mom! I pray for you every night and morning!
Love always,
Your missionary

Week #4

Another week here at the CCM J (That’s MTC in Spanish)

This week felt like it was 2 hours. It fleeeeew by!! I only have a week and a half left. Holy moly! It’s going to be hard saying goodbye to my district but at least we get to fly all together hopefully :) We have become like a family! I've been so blessed with such a nice and friendly environment but sometimes Hermana Markle and I have to go in another room so we don't get distracted.

Mi Districta (Spanglish)
So this week there have been a few new semi exciting things (let’s be honest Hermana Markle and I consider the sidewalk getting redone exciting).

1.      So my teacher has a friend who works at the MTC and she is not a member of the church. So he decided to somehow switch our investigator at the TRC. So we are currently teaching a cute college girl named Marianna. She is the absolute cutest. We love her. Our lessons are very short because it takes us quadruple the amount of time it would if we were teaching in Spanish. So yes it would be nice if I knew Spanish but I just tell myself "be patient be patient be patient."

2.      The next exciting thing is I have a new name. "Watermelon Women". Wooohooo. JK people don’t really call me it that often. Actually only once but yes I eat a bowl full of watermelon for every meal yum yum yum.

3.      So we have gotten a good amount of rain here. Nothing compared to what you guys have gotten. But the other night there was a mad rain storm while we were in class and it was all over when class was done. But last night it rained when we were walking home at the end of the day. So Hermana Markle, Gibson, Yardley, and I all danced in the rain. And then Markle tried to jerk and it was probably the absolute funniest thing I have ever seen. Oh bless her heart. I love her. Life in the MTC is wonderful when you have Hermana Markle as a companion.

4.      Another exciting thing Hermana Markle and I do here is shop at the bookstore. It’s the closest thing to the outside world we can get haha. We are missionary shopaholics (but we don’t actually buy anything).

5.      So on Sunday I said goodbye to my old calling sad, sad day. But I am now the Zone Sister Training Leader. So now we have more meetings we go to and then we welcome the new peeps today. We are supposed to set a good example to all the new missionaries so we will try our absolute best to not have a laughing attack, no promises.

Every week just gets better. There are definitely discouraging moments but I tend to forget those. I struggle with not feeling overwhelmed when everyone else is speaking Spanish, but during a devotional the speaker said, "Have confidence in He who called you! He chose you. He chose our call. He did not call us to be failures and we can have confidence in him." So that was very comforting. My Dad sent me a dear Elder with some great advice and since then there has been a drastic difference in my Spanish. I just can’t wait for Aug 18th. It’s going to be extremely hard once I can only speak Spanish. It sounds weird but I can’t wait to completely rely on the Lord. Thank you for all the mail!! I love it! Keep it coming :) The church is true and I love you :)

Love always,
Hermana Fowler

A quick email:
August 6, 2014
Mom, I miss watching chick flicks with you!!! Be sure and make a list of movies we can watch when I get home. So Hermana Markle and I are the sister training leaders with Elder Kirk and Ferrin so we have lots of fun. We had to memorize all the new missionaries names by their picture. There were 22 of them! My whole zone is like 40 people, so today we are giving them a little orientation and then we are bearing our testimonies and just making them feel welcome. I have to go but I love you so much!

Yummy, yummy ice cream! I got cheesecake flavor so yep I'm on cloud nine!

July 31, 2014
Mom!
I love you! How are things at home? Are you home a lot or are you usually working?  The family reunion honestly sounds like so much fun! I miss everyone so much. I wish they all lived closer. They really make things so fun. I love the Golden Coral. Did everyone wear cow girl hats? So does Syd have a boyfriend? How is Brandon? He is about to enter his senior year right? I’d love to hear from them. That is so nice of Jason to pay for Mandarin. Holy Cow! He is so kind. I’m glad everyone went to church with you. I’m sure Mike did amazing! I look up to Mike for so many reasons but I have always loved his talks. That is wonderful what Brother Waite shared. The luau sounds like a party!! Gosh I wish I could have seen Ben dance, but then I’d probably be blind. JK :) Grandma always goes all out. I love it! I can’t wait to see pics. Make sure to send a picture of the poster Grandma put up. I’m glad she thought about me! It means a lot. I have a picture of Grandma and Grandpa on my desk in my classroom.

Mom you are going to do so good in school. You did so well last time you have no reason to worry J Do you know what classes you are going to take? You really should try to learn Spanish. You’d probably learn it faster than me! My Spanish is getting better. I just got 1500 flashcards haha so I’m determined to bet better before I leave the MTC. My teachers are amazing Mom! I’ve been so blessed here.

Found some people from Bountiful WOOHOO!
This lovely Hermana and I
Sister Rachel Peters
That’s cool that Ben got to go with Brother McArthur! How did it go? That is also so nice of the Tolman’s. I’ll try to write a thank you note. My writing time is way limited and my handwriting is getting bad. Elder Kirk is teaching me how to write better. He has girl handwriting. It’s like perfect! Whatever, I’m not jealous or anything.

Yes we had a rain storm here too! It was wonderful and smelled amazing. That’s funny you say that because I thought about you too. But I always do. My district went crazy about your package. They all loved your notes and were soooo happy. I have eaten so much candy this week. You are the absolute sweetest for sending those packages. I love you mommy!!!!

Your package made my life!
Yes, my bed is so comfy. Or I could just be way tired. There are so many going to Costa Rica. Probably around like 30! It never happens that way. Kenton is great. I’ll try to take a pic with him this week. I took a picture with McKay this week. He seems to be doing very well and leaves on Monday. Crazy. We get a new district leader on Sunday so that will be interesting. Elder Kirk has set the bar high.

How is Thomas? Does he like the car? Will you send pictures of it? How are Thuryle and Lloyd doing? Tell them I love them and miss spending time with them. That’s cool that you saw Brant. He’s a good guy.

I am so proud to be your daughter. I want to be a better person so bad. I’m working on it. I have so many things I want to achieve I just need to not get frustrated. I love being a missionary Mom! It’s hard to explain. It’s just not about me. It’s all about the Lord and His children. It’s the funnest thing I’ve ever done! I love you with all my heart! Be safe! Love yourself!

Love always,

Your missionary!
